Famous Deaf people in the world. (#1)

          Helen Keller

Today, I have decided to write about some of the most famous Deaf people in the world. I was inspired as a result of a question asked by my friend concerning deaf people in Nigeria and their struggle in advocating for Disability Rights Bill.

He asked: Deaf people have been advocating for the passing of Disability Right bill as if this will give them the the opportunity in getting Job of their dreams. Is there any Deaf person in history who had ever became so famous in this world?

I am writing this blog in reply to his question. The first person that comes into the picture is:

1. HELEN KELLER

Helen Keller was one of the most inspired blind and deaf writer, author, and lecturer in the world. She was born with the ability to see and hear but later at age 19, she contracted an illness described by doctors as "an acute congestion of the stomach and brain" which might have been scarlet fever or meningitis. The illnesses left her both Deaf and Blind.

In May 1888, killer attended the Parkins Institute for the Blind. In 1894, she and Anne Sullivan moved to New York to attend the Wright-Humason school for the deaf and to learn from Sarah Fuller at the Horace Mann school for the Deaf.

On January 22, 1916, Keller travelled with her teacher to a small town of Menomonie in western Wisconsin to deliever a lecture at the Mabel Frainter Memoral Building, inspired the attendance which was captured in the weekly sum county News.

"A message of optimism, of hope, of good cheer and of loving service was brought to Menomonie Saturday-a message that will linger long with these fortunate enough to have received it. The message came with the visit of Helen Keller and her teacher, Mrs. John Macy, and both had a hand in imparting its Saturday evening to a splendid audiences that filed the Memorial. The wonderful girl who has so brillently triumphed over the triple afflictions of blindness, dumbness and deafness, gave a talk with her own lips on "HAPPINESS," and it will be remembered always as a piece of inspirated teaching by these who heard it."

Helen Keller famous inspirational quote has been used by many motivational speakers to add flavour to their speaking style. These are some of her quotes:

"Keep your face to the sunshine, and you can not see the shadow"

"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much"

"Optimism is faith that leads to achievement, nothing can be done without hope and confidence"

"When we do the best we can, we never know what miracle is brought in our life, or in the life of another"

"life is either a daring adventure, or nothing"

"Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet, only through experiences of trail and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vission cleared, and ambition inspired and success achieved."

Helen Keller died on June 1, 1969 at age 87 in Westport, Connecticut.
